Turning Struggles into Strength: The Heart Behind Harbor of Hope Foundation
In 1995, I took a bold step toward a dream—a dream that had been kindled by my pursuit of a better education.
I immigrated to the United States, often referred to as the land of opportunity, with the hope of providing myself and my future family a brighter future. My journey has not been easy. I faced numerous challenges, including the struggle of learning a new language, navigating the complexities of being undocumented, and juggling full- time work while attending high school. Yet, my determination, passion for education, and a deep desire to help others fueled my resolve to overcome these obstacles. The challenges I encountered shaped my character and instilled in me a profound understanding of the barriers many families face in our education system. I vividly remember the nights spent studying, often exhausted from work, driven by a vision of a better life not just for myself but for those who would come after me.
Education
was my lifeline, and it became my mission to ensure that others would have the opportunities I fought so hard to attain. In 2018, I made a weighty decision—I placed my house on the market, hoping to move to a state that would offer my children a superior education. However, as I contemplated this move, I realized that many children do not have the option to relocate to better education systems. This realization struck a chord within me, and along with my family, I chose to stay and become part of the solution.
I have since immersed myself in the Pawtucket education system, serving on the Juvenile Hearing Board, participating in the Task Force for Safe Return to Schools during the Onset of COVID-19, with the Pawtucket School Department, and volunteering on school activities. These roles have allowed me to engage directly with educators and administrators, ensuring that the voices of families, particularly those facing challenges similar to my own, are heard and valued. My commitment to this community is personal; my children are products of the Pawtucket public schools. My eldest daughter, LeeAnne, is now in her second year at Rhode Island College after graduating from Tolman High School. Leah, my middle daughter, is an exceptional student at Tolman. My youngest, Leslie, is thriving in her first year at Goff Middle School.
Motivated by my experiences and my children’s journeys, I founded my non-profit organization with a clear mission: to bridge the gap between schools and families while empowering students to achieve their educational and career goals. Our initiatives include:
- Tutoring Program: Many students come from families where parents work two or three jobs, making it difficult for them to assist with homework or academic challenges. Our tutoring program aims to support these students by providing academic assistance, helping them build confidence and succeed in their studies.
- Internship Program: We recognize that hands-on experience is crucial for high school students as they contemplate their future. Our internship program will connect students with local businesses and organizations, providing them with invaluable insights into various career paths. This exposure will empower them to make informed decisions about their education and professional aspirations.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program: This initiative will equip students with essential skills and knowledge, allowing them to work part-time while attending high school or college. This not only helps alleviate financial burdens but also opens doors to future career opportunities in healthcare.
- Parent Leadership Academy: This program aims to enhance parental engagement within our schools. Many parents and guardians want to be involved but may lack the resources or knowledge to navigate the education system effectively. By fostering effective communication and collaboration, we can create a supportive network that benefits both families and schools.
- Crisis Intervention Program: Currently in strategic development, this initiative will address critical gaps in community support by providing:
1. Trauma-informed counseling services
2. Emergency academic interventions
3, Family stabilization resources
4. School-based crisis response teams
Through these programs, we strive to create an inclusive environment that nurtures student growth and empowers families to become active participants in their children’s education. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, and with the right support, they can overcome barriers and achieve their dreams.
As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the resilience and strength that come from adversity. It is my hope that through my organization, I can inspire others to embrace their challenges and turn them into opportunities, just as I have. Together, we can build a brighter future for our children and our community. Thank you for considering our mission and supporting our efforts to make a meaningful impact.
